You can change your first name, middle name and surname. Note that your middle name is not a first name. Names which can be used as a surname may also be taken as a middle name.

You can change your own name, as well as the names of children for which you have parental responsibility if they are under 16 years of age.

Processing time

It takes about three weeks to process an application for a change of name.You can easily check in Altinn if your new name is registered. Your National Registry name will always be displayed under "Your contactinformation".

When we have approved your application, a letter confirming the change of name will be sent to your registered address. If your application is rejected, you will be notified of this electronically if you have chosen to communicate with the Tax Administration exclusively electronically. If you have not chosen this, the letter will be sent to your registered address.


The appeal body is the county governor in the county in which you are resident. However, you must still send the appeal via the tax office.

Under 16?

If you are under 16 years of age, the person or people who have parental responsibility for you must consent to the change of name. If the name change concerns a child over 12 years of age, the child must also give his or her consent.

Paper form

Fill in the form entitled "Melding om endring av navn" (Notification of change of name) and send it to your local tax office.
