A joint mother is a woman who has been given legal status as a parent of the biological child of her female spouse or cohabiting partner. The child must have been conceived with the aid of in vitro fertilisation.

In order for the mother's spouse/cohabiting partner to become a joint mother, you must both complete the form entitled "Søknad om medmorskap" ("Application for joint maternity" - in Norwegian).

Enclosures

You must enclose the following with the application:

  • Consent to in vitro fertilisation (from spouse/cohabiting partner)
  • Documentation from an approved medical centre confirming that the in vitro fertilisation took place.
  • Documentation which shows that, when the child reaches the age of 18, it will be entitled to be told the identity of the sperm donor. It must be stated that there are procedures or registers which ensure that this right can be upheld.
