Children born in Norway to parents without Norwegian citizenship

  • Print

Are you a foreign citizen living in Norway? If you give birth in Norway, you must also apply for a residence permit for your child. It is the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) who processes such applications.

Within the first year you must apply for residence permit for your child. If both parents at this time have:

  • permanent residence permit or Norwegian citizenship
  • or have applied and are eligible for permanent residence permit or Norwegian citizenship

they can apply for permanent residence permit for their child.

If the child is an EEA country citizen, the child may receive a registration certificate at the police.
