The road to marriage - step by step

  • Print

Here you can follow the formal procedure for getting married in Norway, or you can go straight to the point you want to learn more about. Choose the step you want.

You will receive a certificate from the Tax Administration

The Tax Administration will issue what is known as a certificate of no impediment to marriage, which demonstrates that you fulfil the conditions for entering into marriage.

The certificate will be sent to you in the post*, unless you entered the address of the official who will perform the wedding ceremony in the personal declarations. The certificate will then be sent to this person.

The certificate will be valid for four months.

If you do not meet the conditions for entering into marriage, you will receive a letter in the post. If you do not agree with the decision, you can appeal to the county governor where one of you lives.

* If you live at different addresses, we will send the certificate to the oldest person.
