Removal of vehicle number plates

  • Print

If your vehicle's number plates have been removed, it may be because you have not paid the annual motor vehicle tax due on it.

Norwegian Customs, the Police and the Public Roads Administration have authority to remove vehicle number plates.

If your vehicle's number plates have been removed, you can check whether the annual motor vehicle tax due on it has been paid.

Vehicle number plates may also be removed because

    • the vehicle is not adequately insured
    • the vehicle failed its EU inspection

In these cases, you must contact the Public Roads Administration.

Tax surcharge

If you do not pay the annual motor vehicle tax by 20 March, you will also have to pay a tax surcharge. This applies even if you have not received an invoice.

You will have to pay all taxes due for payment before the number plates will be returned to you. The Public Roads Administration will hold your number plates. You will have to pay a fee to the Public Roads Administration before you can get your plates back. The Public Roads Administration will be able to provide more information on number plates.
