Own vehicle

You cannot use your own vehicle in Norway if the vehicle is registered abroad.

There are a few exceptions:

  • you must demonstrate a foreign-registered vehicle
  • you must use a foreign-registered vehicle when you move to or from Norway
  • you have to drive a foreign-registered vehicle through Norway
  • you must use a foreign-registered vehicle for a short period of time in isolated cases, for a fixed period of time and with clearly specified persons and vehicles.

Before you bring the vehicle into Norway, you must apply for a driving permit. This must be documented.

Vehicles registered on Svalbard

If you are permanently resident on Svalbard and are going on holiday to mainland Norway, you can apply for a permit to use the vehicle. You can be issued with a driving permit for up to three months in any one calendar year. Before you bring the vehicle into Norway, you must apply for a temporary use of vehicle registered on Svalbard.

You must pay the annual motor vehicle tax for the vehicle. Please note if you move to the mainland, you have to declare and pay tax for the vehicle.
