How to import a vehicle

Purchase temporary number plates or use foreign plates

You can use foreign-registered number plates for up to 30 days after the vehicle has been cleared through customs. You must have valid plates, the vehicle registration document and insurance. If the vehicle does not have these, it can only be used if it has valid temporary number plates.

You can purchase temporary number plates from a Public Roads Administration traffic station. The Public Roads Administration will require documentation of the chassis number in order to issue temporary number plates.

You are responsible for ensuring that the number plates and the insurance are valid. If you are unsure whether the number plates are valid, contact the Public Roads Administration or the relevant foreign authority. You can take out the Norwegian Motor Insurers' Bureau's Frontier Motor Insurance policy with Norwegian Customs.

Brokers who have trade plates (temporary number plates for dealers) can use these.
