Policy for the use of research data

When your application for research data is approved, certain requirements apply to how the information must be handled. Here you can read about the main requirements.

Duty of confidentiality

Researchers have a duty of confidentiality for all information that is covered by a statutory confidentiality obligation. This also applies to other types of information, such as audit methods, if information about these is disclosed. The duty of confidentiality also applies after the project has been completed.

No one other than approved applicants may be granted access to the information.

Access control

Only named project participants in the specific research project can have access to the information.

Purpose

The information may only be used for the research purpose that is approved and set out in the decision. This means that it is not permitted to share the information or use it for other purposes. It's not permitted to use the data for teaching purposes or other purposes without a new application or approval.

Data processing

Data must normally be processed through a secure technical solution at a research institution in Norway. We'll determine any restrictions when we approve your application.

Deletion

Data must be deleted when the research project has been completed, or at the time specified in the decision. It's possible to get an extension upon application.

The information must be deleted after the project has been completed, and specific requirements for storage and deletion are set out in the decision. It's the responsibility of the researchers to ensure that the data are stored and deleted in accordance with the conditions.

Changes to the project

If new individuals are to be given access to the data, you must apply for new access. You must also reapply if you need to retain the data beyond the deletion deadline, or if you want to use the data in another research project.
