Temporary use of vehicle registered on Svalbard

If you’re a permanent resident on Svalbard and intend to use a Svalbard-registered vehicle on the mainland, you must report this use to the Tax Administration and temporarily re-register the car.

You must do the following

Bring the documents, when you receive them, to the Norwegian Public Roads Administration - Svalbard Licensing and Registration Office to re-register your vehicle.

Remember!  You must book in appointment before you can visit the Svalbard Licensing and Registration Office.

Persons who are registered in the population register on Svalbard can import and use cars and vehicles registered for use on Svalbard to the Norwegian mainland for up to 93 days in a 12 month period.

When you’ve reported a period of temporary usage of a Svalbard-registered vehicle on the mainland, you can change the start of this period up until the start date. The same applies to the end of the period.

Are you moving permanently?

If you are moving to the mainland, you must get customs clearance and pay the appropriate duties for the vehicle.
