Register your marital status when you move to Norway

You must state your marital status when you move to Norway. Correct information in the National Population Register about your marital status (whether you’re single, married, divorced, or widowed) is important. This can affect which public benefits and services you're entitled to.

Register information about the person you're married to

When you've been granted a residence permit for Norway from the UDI, the information about your marital status may in some cases be incomplete. You should then send us information about your marital status within 30 days of the UDI’s decision.

You do this by completing and sending us the form "Erklæring om min sivilstand" (Declaration of my marital status, in Norwegian). You do not need to attach any supporting documents about your marital status.

Send the form to:

Skatteetaten
Postboks 9200 Grønland
0134 Oslo

We recommend that you send us the information within 30 days

If you do not send the information within 30 days, you must provide proof of the changes you want to make to your marital status. The supporting documents must be the original documents, translated and affixed with an apostille or legalised.

You can find information about getting married and how to get your marriage recognised in Norway here.
