Norwegian national identity number to get a passport

Norwegian citizens are entitled to a Norwegian passport. If you do not already have a Norwegian national identity number, the passport authority will ask the National Population Register to assign one on your behalf before your passport is issued.

You apply for a Norwegian passport through a passport authority. If you're abroad, this will be the nearest Norwegian foreign mission. If you’re in Norway, it'll be a passport and ID office run by the Norwegian police.

To be assigned a national identity number, it’s important that you bring the correct documents when you meet with the passport authority. To give you information tailored to your situation, we’ll ask you to answer a few questions.
