Residence permit and incorrect marital status
If you or your spouse have been granted a residence permit in Norway for six months or more, and your marital status is incorrect in the National Population Register, you must contact the Tax Administration.
How we register your marital status
If you're granted a residence permit in Norway for six months or more, you’ll usually be registered as a resident in Norway based on a notification from the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI). In these cases, we register your marital status based on the information provided in that notification. If we need more information, we’ll send you a letter that you must respond to within 30 days
If your marital status is incorrect, you must contact the Tax Administration
If you’ve been registered as a resident in Norway but believe your marital status is incorrect or incomplete, you must contact the Tax Administration, not UDI.
You can contact us online.
When you contact us, you must state:
- why you believe your marital status is incorrect
- what you believe your correct marital status is
What happens after you contact us
Whether we can correct the error depends on why the incorrect information was registered.
- If we registered the wrong information based on what we received, we’ll correct it.
- In other cases, you’ll need to provide proof of your marital status. The required documents depend on the country where you were married. Read more about how to have your marriage recognised in Norway.
- In many cases, we can use information from the immigration authorities if you or your spouse were granted a residence permit based on your relationship – for example, in cases of family reunification. In such cases, we’ll obtain the information from UDI, and you do not need to contact them.
We’ll get in touch with you if we need more information or documentation.
