Received too much child maintenance or other maintenance payments

If you’ve received too much maintenance, the person liable to pay maintenance is entitled to a refund of the money – either as a private settlement or by offsetting the amount against future payments.

Nav will notify both parties when too much maintenance has been paid. Then it’s up to you to arrange the repayment between the two of you.

Alternatively, the person who has paid too much maintenance may apply to have the amount offset against future maintenance payments. Then you’ll receive a smaller amount each month until the offset has been carried out.
