Two tax schemes

There are two tax schemes on Svalbard. The scheme you come under depends on whether you are subject to ordinary tax liability as a resident (Section 2-1 of the Svalbard Tax Act), or limited tax liability only (Section 2-2 of the Svalbard Tax Act).

Real property on Svalbard

Even if you are not resident on Svalbard for tax purposes, you will still be liable to pay tax on capital in and income from real property and installations and associated auxiliary plant situated on Svalbard. In the event of the realisation of such property or installations, the same rules will apply to the tax liability in connection with gains/deduction entitlement for losses as apply on the mainland.
