Private storage of foreign-registered vehicle in Norway

You can store a foreign-registered car on a specified address in Norway for up to 182 days in any 12-month period. The 182-day period can be divided into a number of periods.

As a result of the coronavirus situation, a temporary exemption has been granted from the requirement relating to the number of days

Please contact us if you’re getting close to, or if you’ve exceeded, the permitted 182 day-limit. We’ll help you extend the permit to store a foreign-registered vehicle in Norway.

You may change the reported information yourself.

The arrangement applies to all types of vehicles, including trailers and caravans.

The feedback you receive indicating that the information has been sent to the tax authorities will be deemed to provide confirmation that a retention permit has been issued. You must keep this confirmation available so that you can present it upon request.

You must give advance notice

The person who intends to store the vehicle must notify the Norwegian Tax Administration before the storage takes place.

Please note the following:

  • If you’re going to re-export the vehicle when the storage period expires, you must make sure you have access to do so in accordance with the regulations on temporary use of foreign-registered vehicles in Norway.
  • If you do not follow the regulations, you'll have to pay duties. You may also have to pay additional tax.
