If you've paid too much child maintenance

If you’ve received a decision from NAV that you’ve paid too much maintenance, you can apply for an offset. This means that your monthly payments will be reduced.

Conditions for an offset:

  • NAV must have made a decision confirming that you’ve paid too much. 
  • The new maintenance payment must be higher than any advance payment to the maintenance recipient.
  • Your overpayment and the monthly maintenance payment must relate to the same child.
  • You must still have an ongoing maintenance payment to the child you’ve paid too much for. 
  • Only the maintenance payer can apply for an offset. 

If these conditions are not met, we cannot offset the payment. You must then yourself reclaim the amount from the maintenance recipient or collect it with the help of an enforcement officer.
