Norwegian national identity number to get a passport

Norwegian citizens have the right to receive a Norwegian passport. If you do not already have a Norwegian national identity number, the issuing authority will request one from the National Population Registry on your behalf before issuing the passport.

You apply for a Norwegian passport at an issuing authority. If you’re outside of Norway the nearest issuing authority will be a Norwegian Foreign Service Mission. If you’re in Norway, the nearest issuing authority will be one of the passport and ID offices of the police.

To get a national identity number, it’s important that you bring the correct documentation when you go to the issuing authority. You’ll be asked to answer a few questions so that we can give you information relevant to your situation.

Please note that these questions are only used to provide information that is more relevant to you. The message shown as a result of your replies cannot be used as documentation.
