No. of hours per week to which a full-time position equates

  • Updated: 15 September 2022

A full-time position normally corresponds to 37.5 hours per week. Shift workers and others may have a different number of hours for a full-time position.

Brief information on the number of hours per week to which a full-time position equates

State the agreed number of working hours per week which a full-time position in equivalent employment constitutes. Deduct unpaid meal breaks. Do not make any adjustments for overtime, leave of absence, extra time, etc.

    Examples

Jacob, William and Kari are employed by an enterprise where a full-time position equates to 37.5 per week.
    • Jacob works full-time (100 percent FTE). State the number of hours per week to which a full-time position equates = 37.5.
    • William works part-time (80 percent FTE). State the number of hours per week to which a full-time position equates = 37.5.
    • Kari works a variable number of hours from week to week. State the number of hours per week to which a full-time position equates = 37.5.

Emma works a continuous shift pattern (80 percent FTE) State the number of hours per week to which a full-time position equates = 33.6.

Svein works in a kiosk which is open four hours a day from Monday to Friday. State the number of hours per week to which a full-time position equates = 37.5.

    Is it mandatory

Yes, you must state the number of hours for all ordinary and maritime employment.

It is voluntary for freelancers, contractors and fee recipients.

You should not specify the number of hours if the employment type is pension or other non-employment benefits.

    When you must submit reports

State the number of hours the first time you report the employment and repeat this number every month up to and including the month in which you terminate the employment.

If the number of hours for a full-time position is unknown

You can use 37.5 if the number of hours to which a full-time position equates is unknown. You should not state 0 hours. For example, 37.5 hours is used where it is unusual to work full-time, e.g. newspaper distribution staff, examination invigilators, support contacts, etc.

37.5 hours is considered to be a normal working week in Norway.

    Teaching staff

In the case of teachers, 37.5 hours should normally be stated as the number of hours to which a full-time position equates. Do not use the number of teaching hours.

    Respite care workers

Respite care workers can have written contracts with employers to work for up to 60 hours in a 7-day period.

If you have received an error message regarding a respite care worker that has a contract for more than 45 working hours, you can ignore the error message. You do not need to correct it or resubmit the a-melding.

When an employee has changed job

If the person has changed job within the enterprise, with the result that the number of hours to which a full-time position equates changes, you should state this in the first month from which the change applies.

    NB!
State the number of hours which is standard for the number of hours full-time in the type of job concerned. The actual working time for the employment is indicated by what you state as the full-time equivalent (FTE) percentage.

    Example

Frida worked until May as a caretaker in an 80 percent FTE position. The number of hours to which a full-time position equates is 37.5.

From May onwards, she switches to a job as an operative (chemical process industry) in an 80 percent FTE position with the working time arrangement of ‘continuous shift work’, 33.6 hours/week. The number of hours to which a full-time position equates is 33.6.
