Towards greater diversity - step by step

The Tax Administration’s purpose is to finance our welfare society by making sure that everyone does their bit. We act on behalf of the general public, as our welfare society benefits all members of the population. The trust placed in us by the public is great and we work hard every day to earn it.

We have more than 7,000 employees all over the country and as a whole we mirror the diversity in the population with our differences in age, gender, educational background, ethnicity, ability, faith, and sexual orientation. It is important for us that everyone feels comfortable in the workplace, regardless of who they are, where they come from, whom they love or what they believe in.

We have zero tolerance for discriminating practice and behaviour. Status equality, gender equality and diversity are important focus points. We must admit, however, that we have some way to go before we can relax in our efforts – both inside the organisation and out. We are making progress, step by step, towards greater diversity. It is a task that needs to be followed up systematically every single day, not only in June.

The Tax Administration celebrates Pride in the same way as we celebrate International Women’s Day in March and Sami National Day in February. Pride is a celebration of gay love and diversity – everybody can be who they are. At the Tax Administration, we will treat everyone equally – regardless of who you are and whom you love.

By joining the  celebration, we want to put diversity and equal rights on the agenda and raise awareness – primarily amongst our own employees – about the importance of equal treatment and inclusion of all kinds of people, both as colleagues and when meeting our users. Active awareness is the basis for inclusive practice. We want all groups of people to feel safe in contact with the Tax Administration and to know that they will always be met with respect.

Here are measures that are under continuous improvement to further equal treatment and diversity:

Recruitment

The recruitment of new colleagues is one of our strongest instruments to ensure diversity in our workforce. We have for some time tested different measures to ensure that everyone who wants to apply to work for us is able to, and we encourage applicants with gaps in their CVs, people with disabilities or of immigrant origin to apply for our advertised positions. We also participate in the government trainee programme for people with higher education and disabilities.

Language

All communication from us should be easily understood and must not contribute to discrimination or exclusion. We want to provide clear and precise communication by letter, in forms, printed materials and on our website. We have project groups working with plain language and translation to ensure that we can publish information in both forms of Norwegian (bokmål and nynorsk) and in several foreign languages.

Universal design

We follow the guidelines for universal design to make our services accessible to all, regardless of their abilities.

Whistleblowing

We have routines for whistleblowing and the handling of cases of discrimination, sexual harassment, bullying and other types of conflict.

Culture

The workplace culture at the Tax Administration is the sum of everyone working here. How we are, act and collaborate depends on everyone’s attitudes and actions. Through daily management and management development as well as set of house rules, we work to achieve a culture promoting equal status, gender equality and diversity.
