Changing the engine power

A vehicle is considered modified when the engine power is changed – so-called chip tuning or tuning. From and including 19 June 2023, you generally no longer have to report an increase of engine power to the Norwegian Tax Administration.

The exemption from the reporting obligation applies to snowmobiles and motorcycles without registered CO2 emissions in the vehicle register, where power is a tax component.

You can check if your modifications must be reported and are taxable in the modification calculator.

If you’re in doubt regarding what you are allowed to do with your vehicle, it can  be a good idea to contact one of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Offices  of the Norwegian Public Roads Administration for guidance before you report and pay for the modification to the Tax Administration.

Motorcycles and snowmobiles

Engine power only forms the basis for one-off registration tax for motorcycles (tax group F) and snowmobiles (tax group G).

When a snowmobile (tax group G) is modified, an increase of engine power results in an additional tax. This must be reported and paid before you implement the changes and contact the Public Roads Administration for approval.

When a motorcycle (tax group F) is modified, an increase of engine power results in an additional tax if documented CO2 emissions were not registered when it was first registered in the Public Roads Administration’s vehicle register. This must be reported and paid before you implement the changes and go to the Public Roads Administration for approval.

Engine power reduction

You do not have to report a reduction of engine power to the Tax Administration.

It can be a good idea to check with the Public Roads Administration if you’re unsure if you’re allowed to modify the vehicle.

A reduction of engine power does not lead to a reimbursement of previously paid taxes.

Incorrect power in the vehicle registration document

If you discover that your vehicle’s engine power has been increased, but information about it is missing from the vehicle registration document, you should contact the Public Roads Administration.
