Apply for support in connection with funeral expenses

Funeral grants are intended to help cover actual and necessary expenses for the funeral.

Since the eligibility depends on income and wealth, NAV will request access to the deceased’s tax return in connection with the application.

You can find information about funeral grants at NAV

If the funeral home applies on your behalf

Many funeral homes offer to apply for a funeral grant on your behalf.

If you choose to allow the funeral home to apply on your behalf, you must give them a power of attorney to request the deceased’s tax return. If the deceased was married/partner or cohabiting partner with shared children, the surviving spouse/partner/cohabiting partner with shared children must also provide a power of attorney for the funeral home to request their tax return.

If you apply yourself

If you apply to NAV for the funeral grant yourself, you must attach the deceased’s tax return for the previous year. You must also attach the tax return for any surviving spouse/partner or cohabiting partner with shared children.
